Center for Learning Opportunities


The Center for Learning Opportunities offers a continuum of services and programs for students who have been found eligible for special education. These services encompass but are not limited to one-on-one direct support of students, in class teacher and student support, consultation with staff, and instructional support in directed study. These services are provided by the special education staff which includes resource room teachers, integration facilitators, and instructional assistants. Although most of these services are provided for special students on an Individual Education Plan (IEP), students without an IEP may benefit as well. The following are courses offered for high school credit:

 

1052/DIRECTED STUDY
Grades 9-12                                        Credit as Assigned
Prerequisite: Recommendation of Evaluation Planning
Team or approval from the Learning Opportunities Coordinator

Operating under the philosophy of structure, consistency
and support, this course is designed to assist students with study strategies, time management, organization, test preparation, editing, and assignment completion. Those students with an IEP will be assisted with their specific goals and objectives. Students receive help in specific skill areas. No more than 1 credit per year may be earned.

 

957/LIFE SKILLS (I, II, III, IV)
Grades 9-12                                            1 credit
Prerequisite: Recommendation of IEP Team and approval
from the Learning Opportunities Coordinator
This course pertains to personal and health issues,
nutritional needs, money skills, and time management. The course will also include emphasis on functional reading and math skills. The course will closely follow the needs of the student as outlined in the Individual Educational Plan. Social skills will be an important part of this course.

 

116/MATH SKILLS
Grades 9-12                                            1 math credit
Prerequisite: Recommendation of IEP Team and approval
from the Learning Opportunities Coordinator
This course is designed to teach and reinforce basic mathematic concepts, operations and their application to work and life. Study of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions and percents will be combined with applications such as wages and deductions, banking, savings, credit and specific work applications. This course can reinforce concepts covered in earlier math courses, prepare students to continue on to other high school math courses such as Math for Life or pre-Algebra and/or prepare the student for the use of mathematics in post secondary work and life.

 

0955/CAREER EXPLORATION
Grades 9-12                        Credits based on hours worked
Prerequisite: Recommendation of IEP team and approval from the Learning Center Coordinator. (A number of regular education spaces are available with approval of administration.)
Career Exploration offers students the opportunity to experience a variety of hands-on work experiences in the community and the school. Students may spend 6-10 weeks, or longer, working on goals and objectives for each specific work site. Support from an employment specialist and/or
staff person will be obtained for the development of work competencies and skill training. Areas of study will include choosing an occupation, and finding, keeping and managing a job.

 

1012/READING FOR LIFE
Grades 9-12                                1 Humanities credit
Students will focus on the question: why is it important
to be a life long reader? The purpose of this class is to make Language Arts a meaningful experience for students, while improving their reading comprehension and writing fluency. Students will learn how to read and write comfortably in a structured setting. This course is designed to encourage risk taking in writing and reading aloud. Students will respond to readings through journaling and class discussion based on the readings. Students will share their written work and learn how to provide and receive feedback.

 

0954/ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Grade 9-12                                 1 Physical Education credit
This course is offered only to students receiving special education services. It is designed to support the student’s individual cognitive and physical needs. Activities include bowling, weight lifting and cooperative games.
