National Honor Society

Selection Criteria for the National Honors Society

the following descriptions fit and explain the qualities one student must embody
to be eligible for the National Honor Society:

Scholarship

To be elegible for election into the National Honors Society a junior or senior must have earned a grade point average of 90 or higher.

Leadership

Consideration should be given to the number of offices a student has held within a school or community organization, including election of captain or co-captain of an athletic team. A student's leadership should embody a wholesome influence on WUHS. In taking initiative in class, school, or the larger community, a real leader strives to guide and aid others to attain the same objectives. The price of leadership is sacrifice. Sacrifice is the willingness to yeild one's personal interests for the interests of others. A leader has confidence in his or herself and will go forward when others hesitate.

Service

Service can be expressed in various ways. It is a willingness to work without recognition or reward for the benefit of a school or community. It could include membership and/or participation in extra curricular activities in and joutside of school. It is work that keeps the spirit of the community alive.

Character

Character is the element of personal being that distinguishes one person from another. It is striving daily to make the right choice. It is being what we wish to be in the eyes of others. Students show character by demonstrating qualities such as reliability, honesty, sincerity, and kindness. People who embody character lead by mere natural example and attract others to follow through this natural leadership. School suspensions, difficulties with established law and order, and/or chronic discipline problems do not demonstrate the level of character needed to be invited into the NHS.
