9th Grade IES students "showed their stuff" last night as they presented their results from the Twin States Mercury Project. The project is in its second year and is a collaboration between WUHS, Steven High School, Dartmouth College, MBR National Historic Park and several more organizations. Students are involved in a long-range project where they collaborate with graduate students and scientists to study and monitor mercury levels within MBRNP. Student also participate in a field experience, search for dragonfly larvae and sent samples to a Dartmouth lab for analysis. Last evening's event was the culmination of their work. The audience heard a keynote presentation about the changes in mercury levels and its impacts from Dr. Sarah Nelson, Assistant Research Professor, Senator George Mitchell Center for Environmental & Watershed Research and then circulated through the poster presentations from all the student groups. More than 300 students from 30 Vermont high schools shared their thoughts on the major issues facing the United States in Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) second annual State of the Union essay contest. WUHS junior Katie Leavitt was selected as one of the 19 finalists. Among other issues, the students wrote about the declining middle class, growing inequality in the United States, the environment, civil liberties, and the burdens of student debt.
"This is a pivotal moment in American history and all Americans, including our young people, must be thinking about and debating the serious issues facing our country. That is what democracy is all about," Sanders said. "I'm delighted that 308 students, from 30 different schools throughout Vermont, thought about the challenges ahead as they wrote their own State of the Union essay."

Seventh grade global studies students are putting their netbook computers to good use. Students have been examining African country data from web sites such as the CIA World Factbook and using Google Spreadsheets to collaboratively collect and analyze it. Google Spreadsheets also allows students to create charts and graphs to represent their data in different ways. The "Intensity Map" on the right represents life expectancy in African countries and was created using Google Spreadsheets. There are also several online tools such as GapMinder and IBM's Many Eyes and allows student to upload data sets and create new and interesting visualizations.

Dear Parents,
We're going to try something different this year. Should there be a need for a snow day, we will have an eight period day upon our return. In the past we have skipped the snow day, whether it be a Green day or a White day, and continued on with the regular, four block schedule. Under the new bell schedule, we will have all eight blocks on the day immediately following a snow day. This will allow all of your child's teachers to see him or her for about 45 minutes. After the eight period day, we will pick back up with the regular Green and White day schedule. I have attached the bell schedule and will ask that it be posted on the school website as well. We will assess the effectiveness of this schedule come spring. Please call or email with any questions.
Thanks,
Greg Schillinger

Students conducted a waste audit at the school with an eye toward learning how we can, as a community, implement systems that will reduce the amount of trash we send to the landfill. Students collected all trash and recycling produced on Jan 24 and sorted it on Jan 25. Items were sorted it into many different categories including recycling (paper, glass, plastic, tin, etc), compostable and non-recyclable waste. Students plan to graph data and create a fun, informational video that documents the process and suggests solutions for the future, some of which they will tackle during the second semester. |

Students in Brooke Newsome's Advanced Placement Art class were inspired by the impact of Tropical Storm Irene. For this assignment students chose one or more stories about Irene to visually communicate their intimate and ultimate concerns using mixed media, found images and in some cases objects.
