Guiding Principles

The Woodstock Union High School faculty, staff and administration aspire to build a climate of respect, trust and courage. We consciously commit ourselves to:

Learning Expectations

We expect a Woodstock Union High School graduate to be a knowledgeable student who is:

  • a complex thinker who uses a variety of complex reasoning and problem solving strategies effectively;
  • a collaborative worker who demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in working toward the achievement of group goals;
  • a skilled information processor/consumer who assesses, evaluates, interprets and synthesizes information through a variety of techniques and resources;
  • a self-directed learner who develops personal strategies for managing progress toward goals while pursuing personal standards of excellence
  • a responsible citizen who recognizes and acts upon individual responsibility to the community;
  • effective communicator/producer who effectively uses a variety of media to clearly communicate ideas to diverse audiences for a variety of purposes.

 

The School

We are a comprehensive, fully accredited public secondary school offering a course of studies for students in grades 9 through 12 as described by the Department of Education in Vermont. The approximate student enrollment for the 2017-18 school year is 341 and the pupil-teacher ratio is 9:1.

 

The Curriculum

Woodstock Union High School has used a Block Schedule since the 2002-2003 school year with all blocks meeting on Monday and four 80 minute blocks per day on a two day alternating cycle Tuesday through Friday.

A minimum of 25 units of credits is required for graduation. Minimum required credits include: 6 credits in ARTS, LANGUAGE, AND LITERATURE 7 credits in MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 3 credits in SOCIAL STUDIES 2 credits in PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH 7 credits in Additional Courses

Woodstock Union High School was awarded the national silver medal and ranked #6 in the state and #1,207 nationally out of 21,776 schools in the U.S. News Best High Schools 2012 rankings.

 

AP classes include: Biology, Calculus, Computer Science, Computer Science Principles, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, *Environmental Science, French, Government & Politics, Physics 2, Spanish, Statistics, Studio Art and U.S. History. *Not offered every year

 

Honors classes include: Algebra II – Accelerated, Biology, Chemistry, English II, English III, English IV, French III, French IV, French - Advanced, Geometry - Accelerated, Latin III, Latin IV, Physics , *Advanced Photography, Pre-Calculus, Spanish III, Spanish IV, Spanish – Advanced, Studio Art III, Trigonometry. *Not offered every year WUHS students participate in courses through Hartford Area Career and Technology Center, Virtual High School (VHS), Dartmouth College, Vermont Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), colleges in Vermont that participate in the Dual Enrollment Program, Lycée de Bagatelle in St. Gaudens, France, Vielhas, Spain and various ski schools throughout Vermont

Grading

Woodstock Union High School’s GPA has been determined by averaging precise numerical grades and adding Quality Points for Honors (+5) and Advanced Placement Courses (+10). Weighted courses are denoted on the transcript as Level I (AP), Level II (H) and Level III (CP). It is the policy of Woodstock Union High School to offer academic honors to those students who have achieved academic excellence during their high school career. Except for the Valedictorian and the Salutatorian, WUHS does not provide a class rank. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian are determined at the end of the third quarter marking period of the student’s senior year. Honor Roll status is earned by having no grade lower than 80%. To reach Summa Cum Laude a student must achieve an adjusted GPA of 96% or higher for the marking period while Magna Cum Laude students must achieve an adjusted GPA of 92% or higher for the marking period.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES includes: Agriculture Exploration Club, Student Intern, Rotary Interact, SOS Peer Counseling, Spectrum Teen Center.

 

ENDORSED SCHOOL ACTIVITIES include: Earth Beat, Farm to School, Forensics/Debate, French Club, Senior and Intermediate Math Team, National Honor Society, Queer Straight Alliance, Spanish Club, Supervised Work Experience Program (SWEP), Student Council, Vermont Teen Leadership Safety Program, Jazz Band, Woodstock Newspaper (What’s the Buzz), Yearbook, Yoh Theatre Players.

 

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS include: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Nordic, Alpine, Snowboarding, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Track.
