Eighth graders attended a mini-Poetry Out Loud competition in the library. Students read poetry for their reading genre of the month in January and recited poems in Ms. Hayslett's and Ms. Coleman's English classes.  Twelve students went on to compete in the poetry recitation contest that was judged by seniors, Alyssa Rivera and Lindsey Stuntz who both participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition last year.  The very thoughtful and insightful judges called a tie between Toby Borzekowski's recitation of Walt Whitman's, "O Captain! My Captain!" and Julia Kowalski's recitation of Shakespeare's "Sonnet 1."  After the tie for first, Hannah Coates came in third with her recitation of Malcolm London's "High School Training Ground" and Morgan Bertholdt finished in fourth with Dana Gioia's "Pity the Beautiful."  The entire eighth grade attended the event, all participants received cookies and bookmarks and the winners who tied for first place will receive books of their choice as gifts from the library.  Next week on Tuesday, February 10 the high school students will be competing in the Poetry Out Loud competition that will send the winner to the state competition.  Click on the image to view the entire gallery.
