Rebecca Stead, author of Goodbye Stranger, gave a presentation in the WUMS auditorium for the middle school's culminating activity of the all-school read of her book. There was an author meet and greet in the library before the assembly where students had the opportunity to ask questions about the book, the author's experience as a writer, character development and literary devices the author used. For the assembly, Rebecca Stead gave a presentation on the other books she has written including the 2009 Newbery Medal winner, When You Reach Me, how she maps out her stories, how she plunges into her writing and how she got the idea to write Goodbye Stranger. Stead opened the discussion up to questions, gave a lot of great advice to young writers, explored friendships and relationships formed in middle school and the hard choices teenagers are faced with. Her visit was made possible by a Woodstock Union High School Endowment Grant and a partnership between the Rhoda Teagle Library at WUHSMS and the Richmond Middle School Library in Hanover, NH.
