NECTFL MeadCongratulations to Sr. Bristow and Sra. Leibly.  The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) recently announced that Keri Bristow and Elaine Leibly have been awarded a NECTFL Mead Leadership Fellowship. Sra. Bristow and Sra. Leibly are both Spanish teachers and will be recognized at the NECTFL Awards Ceremony in February at the NY Hilton Midtown. Their proposed leadership project, which they will be developing as a Mead Fellows, involves piloting the Seal of Biliteracy at WUHSMS and then expanding to develop a process for approval of the Seal of Biliteracy in other schools throughout Vermont.

The Northeast Conference has long been committed to developing leaders for the profession from all instructional levels and languages. The Mead Fellowship program, named for Robert G. Mead, NECTFL Chair in 1968, is NECTFL’s signature program for ensuring that world language educators across our region and beyond have models to emulate and that effective leadership is exercised in schools, districts, colleges, universities, communities, and professional associations. This fellowship supports world language teacher-leaders by recognizing their potential to contribute to the improvement of world language education. Mead Fellows develop a project in conjunction with an expert mentor, and progress is reported by the Fellow at subsequent state association and NECTFL conferences. The Mead program is supported in part by SANS, Inc., and we are grateful to the company for their contributions to our profession and to NECTFL. The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages serves educators in all languages (including classical, less commonly taught, and ESL), at all levels from kindergarten through university, in both public and private settings. In existence since the late 1940s, NECTFL is the largest of five regional associations of its kind in the United States, representing educators from Maine to Virginia but exercising leadership nationwide.
