MS Open House
The Middle School Open House was held on Thursday, September 21. We had a great turn out of parents. After a brief assembly in the Yoh Auditorium, parents followed their child’s schedule. Everyone enjoyed this opportunity to meet teachers and see the
classrooms spaces. Announcements for the evening were made by 8th grade students
Emma Tarleton (8) and Kelly Jackson (8) who ended the evening by thanking our
“Rocking Parents” for attending.
Mr. Brad Archer coordinated a student talk with Theo Padnos today in the auditorium. Theo shared his story of survival. In the late fall of 2012, Theo Padnos, a struggling American journalist, slipped into Syria to report on the country's civil war and was promptly kidnapped by Al Qaeda's branch in Syria.
The 2017-18 school year started with the first Woodstock Union High School and Middle School all school orientation program. The day included whole school activities and break out activities specific to each grade level. Together students and staff shared in a feeling of pride for our school community and in building excitement for the year ahead of us. It was the strongest first day of school in my time at WUHSMS.
The energy of the first day continued throughout the first week of school. Students at WUHSMS were engaged in classroom experiences that had them:
Solving mysteries - Evaluating bias and assumptions
Considering what they find valuable in life - Struggling with what constitutes knowledge
Announcing "I don't know what to do" and then leveraging the skills of teachers and peers for help
Sharing personal stories in another language - Opening homes to foreign exchange students (see image above, 29 students from Vielha, Spain begin their stay at WUHSMS)
Using their hands to gather data and/or create something new - Meeting new people
Understanding that teachers at WUHSMS care about student success
