Earth Beat is a group of students who volunteer their time with Mrs. Murray to make the world a better place. They’ve done many things to benefit the school and our community from getting 45 solar panels installed for the school’s power, to simply reminding others to recycle. Although the school’s garden was ruined by Irene, Mrs. Murray is sure they’ll be able to help Farm to School start a new one. Their newest project is having two of their members volunteer their lunch blocks to make sure the leftovers and waste go to their designated spots. Also, they are working on renewing the school’s waste audit. “We are environmental stewards. We’re dedicated to environmental projects,” explains Ms. Murray Earth Beat also hosts a fun event every other year called Earthfest. It is a school and community fair in which they have professionals share their knowledge and students present various projects that they’ve made. Kathleen Sheppard, Miranda Holson, Luke Aspell, Molly Koch, Emma Blaiklok, Kelly Kozlar, Christian Vosburgh, Tess Johnson, Lily Denmeade, Jeff Nass, Elizabeth Kamb, Schuyler Benoit, Sam Zonay, Lexi Osgood, Chelsea Cloud, Cassie Titus, and Brendan Geiger make up the list of students who’ve taken time out of their lives to aid us in having a better home. Some of the organizations that Earth Beat collaborates with include: Vermont Youth Conservations Corps (VYCC), Farm to School, Change the World Kids, and Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS). It is a free and fun way to help the planet; any high school student can join. They meet every other week on Friday mornings from 7:30 to 8 am. So what are you waiting for? See Mrs. Murray to find out how you too can save the planet.
