Wasp Varsity Baseball Win First of the Season PDF Print E-mail

After a heart-breaking loss to Bellows Falls, the Woodstock Wasps came together as a team on their home turf to triumph over the Thetford Panthers on April 12th. Senior Conner Blair was the pitcher for the Wasps, and he threw a fast first inning with only four batters up. Outfielders performed their jobs well and fielded the pop flies that came their way. Doug Avellino, sophomore, started the batting off for the Wasps with a solid single followed closely by Jon DeDell who hit a triple to bring him home. Conner Blair brought DeDell in when he hit a single to give the Wasps a 2-0 lead against Thetford.

During the second inning, Sam Cole popped a single and later stole second. Alex King followed him with a solid double and brought the sophomore Cole home. After many fruitless attempts to tag King out at second, the Thetford pitcher seemed to give up on the idea of getting him out. King waited patiently and bided his time until he was able to run. His opportunity arrived in the form of Bradley Lewis hitting a double and bringing King home.

WUHS Well Represented at Nordic Nationals PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2012 10:52

nordic team junior nationalsNordic Senior veterans Jordan Fields, Jeff Tucker, and Josh Bassette finished their last season together skiing strong at the Junior Nationals competition in Utah and helping to cinch first for the Vermont team at the annual Eastern States Competition back in Vermont a week later.

These boys have been skiing together for four years, and are finally wrapping up their final season as seniors at WUHS. “Nordic has definitely been one of the biggest parts of my high school experience. I couldn’t have had it without my coach and teammates; it’s been amazing,” said Jeff who has been competing in nordic ski racing for eight years.

The “three J’s”, as they’re commonly known among the Woodstock Nordic crowd, recently raced at the Junior Nationals in Utah, where they all had stellar performances. Seven year veteran Jordan Fields took 6th in the 15 kilometer skate race, 18th in the 10K Classic, and 4th in the relay. Fourth year skier Josh Bassette took 20th in the sprint, 62nd in the 15k and 6th in the relay. Jeff, who raced in a 16-17 year-old division (the other two raced in the 18-19 year-old division) placed 30th in the sprint and 18th in the 10K Classic and his team took 7th in the relay.

Track & Field PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2012 10:43

One would think that a sport based solely around running would begin to get tiring, but once you look deeper you will see the dedication, and perspiration that it takes to truly conquer Track and Field. There is a lot more to track than just running, there are many other categories of throwing, and jumping. In fact, the girls team is hoping to take all and win the Division III state championship title for the third year in a row.

While a majority of the team members are runners, there is a closely bound team of throwers who work with Coach Hank Glass. Dylan Gannon, a senior, is going into his fourth year of track and field. “Hank does a great job of teaching us, getting us in the weight room and getting us in good shape and making sure we’re comfortable in our events and have high standards for our season,” says Dylan.

Glass is the husband of head coach Tracy Rose, and a chiropractor specializing in sports medicine. He works with all of the throwers along with some of the runners. Rose has hopes for both teams to try their hardest in this upcoming season. “My hope for both teams is that they are successful. By successful I don't just mean winning. It means hoping everyone has fun, that they learn something, and all see improvement.”

For the past two years in a row, the girls team has won the title of Vermont Division III State Champions. Would it be nice for the girls to win for the third time in a row? “Absolutely and I think it's entirely possible,” says Rose.

The girls team is lead by Stephanie Ambrose, a senior, who is going into her third year on the track and field team. “The team is really huge this year, so I really hope we can win states and bond as a family and have fun,” says Ambrose.

There are a total of 32 girls and 21 boys joining the team this year. Although the number of girls signing up for track is growing rapidly, and the number of boys is dwindling, Rose would still like to see the boys win their first state title. “The boys winning the State Championships would just be the icing on the cake,” she states.

Rackets at the Ready PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2012 10:35

Camille Ertel playing tennis As spring rapidly approaches, tennis players are cracking out their rackets. Tom Hopewell was busy instructing tennis clinics at the Woodstock Health and Fitness Center, but starting March 19th he began coaching the WUHS girls’ tennis team once again. Rose Cantlin is aiding Tom as the assistant coach.

Team Captain Camille Ertel has been eagerly awaiting the start of the tennis season as well. Camille has been on the varsity tennis squad ever since she was a freshman. “I’m really excited to be captain,” Ertel says, “I’m looking forward to bringing an element of leadership, competitiveness, and fun to the season!”

This season, Camille is especially looking forward to starting matches, and creating a really strong bond between all members of the team. “We always have a really tight and bonded team.” She’s also very anxious for the tennis team’s infamous snacks!

This year, the team consists of twelve girls. The only new editions are freshmen Katie Miller and me (Emma McLiverty); we’re thrilled for our first year of high school tennis. Even though the numbers are small, it hasn’t discouraged the girls. They’re still pumped up for a victorious season.

There is also a boys tennis team this year at WUHS; Rob Parker and Tim Gould are coaching the boys towards victory. While the team is very small, they’re mighty, and excited for a successful season!

Last year, the girls had a great season; they made it to the quarterfinals where they lost to Montpelier. “I think that our team has the capability to go even further this year, and a state championship would be a great way to go out my senior year!” Ertel says. Good Luck!

Winter Sports Awards Night PDF Print E-mail

Sports have always been an important part of WUHS’s legacy, and once again, the winter sports season has come to a close with Mr. Thomas’ new version of Sports Awards night.

Beginning with a slide show of photos from the season, this end of season event celebrates all of the athletes and events before getting down to awards. While the ceremony continues with the school’s athletic director listing off students and passing on their respective awards, the ceremony was conducted with a more casual approach, where students were given short introductions (sometimes including fun stories) before receiving their awards.

Mr. Thomas has developed a new series of awards for these events that begin with, “We are...” Some of the highlights of the evening included Coach Tom Avellino receiving the “We are Teachers” award, Constable Kelly Linton receiving the “We are Community” Award and Girls’ Basketball Coach Greg Nalette receiving the “Coach of the Year” award.
