With a 8-2 record and the Marble Valley League title, Woodstock Football is going to the State Championship game and will square off with divisional rival Windsor. This is the first time since 2006 that the wasps have appeared in the state finals.
The game will be held at Castleton State College on Saturday November 12th at 11:00 a.m. Tickets and seats on the fan bus are available through Athletic Director Jeff Thomas.
"Our team is looking pretty good and we have a good chance of winning the state championship," says Offensive and Defensive Tackle Troy Blanchard.
Players stated that the strengths of the team were a strong offense and some players feel that Woodstock also has the strongest defense in the division. "Windsor is probably our toughest opponent and has always been tough and we haven’t had a great record against them." Troy explains. " But with the win earlier in the season we are going to go into the game with a little more confidence. But above all else we just have to play the game." Troy explains
The Woodstock Wasps showed their stuff as they defeated Windsor 35-18 in the regular season finale on October 29 to win the Marble Valley League championship. They then went on to beat Mt. Abe 28-7 in the state semi-finals on November 4th clinching a berth in the state championship.

The loud panting and the pounding of many feet were all that could be heard as Woodstock boys and girls’ cross-country teams thundered into two Marble Valley League titles on Tuesday, October 18 in Springfield. They followed that up with great performances at States with the boys taking second and the girls taking third in Division Two. The boys will continue on to the New England Cross-Country Championships.
Cross Country is a sport of formidable mental and physical endurance but the Woodstock Cross Country team is making it look easy with their undefeated record for both boys and girls.
"This Cross Country season has been awesome. Everyone on the team is equally motivated to do well and reach our goals," says Senior Captain Stephanie Ambrose. The goal, of both the girls and the boys’ teams is to bring home a win from States on October 29. The team gives their full effort every practice as they reach towards this goal. "What’s also nice is that for a race like States, if you’ve been training hard all season and you’ve given it 100% every practice, you know that you’re prepared," Stephanie explains.
The courses are no cake walk. Whether it’s climbing a steep hill, straining to reach the runner ahead or mustering enough kick for a strong finish, it requires endurance and perseverance."It’s fun to finish and know that you just kicked that course’s butt!" says boys’ team member Sawyer Mattsson. The team’s undefeated season has shown the hard work and discipline that has been put into each practice and race.

With the smell of hotdogs in the air and the field lights shining down on all the players, the seniors lost against juniors 18-6, after a stong fight and many good runs from Stephanie Ambrose, Tara Metcalf and Alex Beda.
With her war paint and sleek black clothing, senior QB Melissa Croft had some strong throws, but they were just short of her target. Senior Stephanie Ambrose made the one and only touchdown for the senior team after having a fantastic sprint to the corner, but unfortunately Melissa Croft’s field goal bounced off the bar and did not add another to the seniors’ score. Nicole Stone was the star on the juniors’ side last night, getting two of the three touchdowns, with Sam Harrington getting the third. Junior Katie Leavitt was close to getting a fourth touchdown, but unfortunately ran out of bounds. Laura Boyd was the cheerleader for the seniors, she screamed and waved her Woodstock towel throughout the game.
After the game, the Bonfire was a perfect end to the fun filled night. Many team captains spoke at the fire and thanked everyone for their support throughout the fall season. "I thought it was great. They had a sweet blow torch, and the fire was really hot," Senior Bridger Keleher describes noting, "Its a great place just to hang with friends."
"I thought it was a good idea and it was nice to see people gather together outside of school," Senior Anna Sand adds.

In the wake of tropical storm Irene’s damage and its profound affect on Woodstock’s sports programs, other sports teams from around the state are lending assistance and welcomed help to our teams.
After only two days of available practice, the Woodstock Wasps Football team traveled up to BFA—Fairfax for their season opening game, they had no idea what to expect after the game. The Parents’ Booster club for BFA raised nearly $700 for the football team, gave them a barbecue, and donated school supplies and canned goods for the Woodstock community. BFA—Fairfax’s kindness has opened what Charles Worrell, assistant coach at Woodstock, says is "a relationship of mutual respect with a team we have never had contact with."
It was not only BFA—Fairfax that responded to the needs of the Woodstock sports teams, but others as well. Burlington High School and their vocational school are making team benches to replace the ones lost in the flood. Jeff Thomas, Athletic Director at Woodstock, says "It’s just amazing the amount of kindness we have been shown by everyone." Beyond the benches, Kimball Union Academy graciously allowed the use of their blocking equipment and sleds, which have now been moved to Woodstock. When the Wasps football team faced Winooski donated the profits of the 50/50 raffle to Woodstock.
While the football team was the first to come back, other teams began trickling back in, and with the damaged fields new room needed to be made. A group of volunteers was bent on taming the wild Rock Church Field. The group was able to make it a field once again, but only for the time it is needed for the teams. With few fields available, games would be tough, with most sports such as field hockey and boys and girls soccer scheduled away, but football games remained on the same schedule. Although practices continued, the fields couldn’t handle the strain of the games. The school resorted to the two available field spaces in the Football lit field and the Rock Church field due until the new sod took hold.
The progress the sports teams have made could not have been accomplished without the kindness received from so many. "All teams have a little more to play for this season, not only for themselves but their community," says head football coach Jim MacLaughlin.
