Winter Sports Wrap Up PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2012 10:19

The dismal amount of snow this winter didn’t stop any of the WUHS sports teams from having amazing seasons.

The Climbing team was undefeated, and Girls Snowboarders won States! Both new sports to Woodstock, these teams came into the mix with a big splash.

The boys’ hockey team was coached by Scott Hersey, Charlie Hancock and John Chamberlin. “It was a challenge for us to work together in the beginning, but at the end of the season we learned to come together, and had lots of improvement, ” said Conner Joyce, sophomore, in regard to his team’s seasonal efforts. In their final game, the boys showed their strongest effort, which was a great way to wrap up their season.

The Woodstock Nordic team had an amazing season. “Despite the lack of snow, I believe our team became stronger overall. We were able to focus on technique and accomplished more than with an entire mountain to train on,” says Anna Ramsey, a returning team member. States was in late February and the boys came in 1st and the girls in 3rd! In addition, Carmon Bango (8th grade), Graham Melville,

Lady Wasps Fight Challenges PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 March 2012 08:48

The Woodstock lady wasps basketball players have had a challenging season as they work hard to find a win.
The team has only three returning players from the previous season: Senior Morgan Pierce, and Juniors Nicole Stone and Emma Blaiklock. New to the team this year are sophomore Annie Arthur, and Freshmen: Amber Barcomb, Jenna Rice, Sierra Rowe, Schuyler Benoit and Tess Johnson.
The small team is not the only challenge the girls have been facing. There have been endless injuries to the team members starting with point guard Annie Arthur, when she broke her wrist in the team’s first scrimmage. She is recently back and brings a wide skill set and leadership qualities. Tess Johnson was injured during a practice with her shoulder dislocated and also is recently back. Our captain Morgan Pierce injured her thumb and wrist while playing basketball and has been out for several weeks but we are all hopeful that she will return to the team soon. Even while she is sitting out her senior year, she keeps everyone positive and working hard.
The new freshmen this year have had to make a big and challenging adjustment from an eighth grade playing level, to competing with seniors and juniors who have been playing varsity for years. “It is a lot to handle but they are doing great. They listen and take in the advice given to them by their elders. There are a few things they need to work on, but that goes for all of us,” says Captain Morgan Pierce.
Each and every one of them brings something vital and unique to the team. Amber is a strong three point shooter. Schuyler is a whirlwind of energy who fights for every ball and takes it strong to the hoop. Jenna is becoming an amazing post player and she always has a smile and laugh for us to embrace when things get tough. Finally, Sierra works hard every day to enhance her skills; she stays late after practice and has a consistently good foul shot. Our returning members are as strong, hard working, and dedicated as ever.
The team is having a disappointing season, but they don’t let that get them down. Coach Gregg Nalette works us hard, and challenges us to reach new potentials every day. The team’s biggest goal is to make the playoffs this year, as long as we keep our heads up and keep working hard, hopefully that dream will be achievable. There are eight games left in the season.

Boys Basketball Aims High PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 27 February 2012 08:42

Bauer Neisner JV BasketballBoy’s basketball is looking pretty decent this year at Woodstock Union High School.  The Varsity is 4-8, good enough for 14th in Division II.
“Our team is doing well; Division II is tough with good teams like MSJ, Fair Haven, and Vergennes.  We also have tough competition from Division IV schools like Poultney, Proctor, and Leland & Gray that only offer basketball,”  said Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Jeff Thomas.
“Team Chemistry is a big focus for us because we are not the biggest or fastest team; so if we work together we will accomplish our goals,”  explained Jeff. “So far we have worked as a team and have represented Woodstock well.”
The JV team is also doing well with a record of 4-5 under Coach Avellino.
“We are moving in the right direction, we are getting better every week and our players are working together pretty well,” said JV coach and Varsity assistant, Tom Avellino. “This season is a work in progress as it should be for a JV program.”

Nordic Team Skis Towards Titles PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 February 2012 09:14

This year the WUHS boys’ nordic team is skiing their way towards their 3rd straight state championship despite the lack of snow. The girls’ team also has a good shot at first or second in their division for the first time in years.
The nordic team had a challenging start with a lack of snow that has forced them to practice at the base of Suicide Six rather than their normal location on the Woodstock Golf Course. Despite this challenge, the team has done well in the few meets they have had. On January 31, the boys’ team won the first Marble Valley League final led by seniors Jordan Fields, Jeff Tucker, and Josh Bassette coming in first, second, and third overall. The girls’ team also skied strong coming in second place led by senior Stephanie Ambrose and junior Elizabeth Bassette who tied for 7th place.
“The lack of snow has allowed us to focus primarily on technique,” explains veteran sophomore Anna Ramsey. “I believe that even with our small loop at Suicide Six as our track, we have still been just as successful as when we’ve had a whole mountain to train on.”
This bring-it-on attitude has not only paved the way for a successful nordic season, but has fostered a supportive atmosphere that is conducive to team growth, not just individual improvement. “The people on the team have been very welcoming and encouraging...the moment that I snapped into my skis, I felt like I belonged,” says freshman newbie Jaym Henderson, one of many new members of the team. In fact, there are many freshman bolstering this year’s team with Zane Fields, Campbell Boswell, and Graham Melville joining the boys’ team after competing well in middle school and Kia Amiakiaee, Lindsey Stuntz, Celia Graham, and Jaym joining the girls’ team.
With about 30 team members (boys and girls combined) this is the largest team ever for Woodstock Nordic. Many of the new skiers have recently competed in their first races. However, the team also sports a number of veterans like boys’ team members Fields, Tucker, and Bassette who are all competing in additional Eastern Cup races in the hopes of qualifying for Junior Nationals to be held in Utah next month.
Fields, who participated in Junior Nationals in Minnesota last year says, “I love nordic. It’s all about intensity!” Fields credits a lot of his success to Coach Nick Mahood who shows the same level of dedication to all of his skiers. Each season Mahood asks team members to write down their goals for the season and supports each individual in achieving those goals. While the first four races of the season were cancelled for lack of snow, the team has had at least three racing opportunities so far with two more races scheduled prior to states, which will be held February 24 and 28.
All of the team members are looking forward to a busy few final weeks of the season. “It’s just the best sport!” Jeff Tucker emphasizes.

Can Alpine Girls Do It Again? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 February 2012 09:11

Although the weather caused the alpine ski team to delay its season, the icy courses and unfortunate lack of snow didn’t get in the way of their success as the girls’ team heads towards states in first place and the boys’ team has finished in the top three in the meets thus far.
Despite the individual nature of the sport, this hasn’t prevented the racers from acting as a team by cheering one another on and combining times to win races.
They started with dry land training before there was snow, but as soon as Suicide Six’s trails opened, the skiers were on the mountain preparing to dominate the race courses. Only one skier graduated last year and a slew of great freshmen were added to the group this season so they anticipated an excellent season and have been putting in the effort to achieve one.
The goals set early in the season have been reached. Both the girls and guys teams have worked hard to ski through the finish line in good time. The girl’s team has cross blocked their way to number one in every race so far, while the guys, not far behind, have been placing in the top three. There are two races left, one of which Woodstock is hosting, and the team plans on staying consistent. This has been their goal throughout the season, but it’s been difficult considering the varying conditions of the courses. They differ from mountain to mountain, but practicing at Suicide 6 with instruction from great coaches has helped prepare the skiers for flat, steep and icy trails.
The team consists of skiers with all different ability levels, but everyone has improved and continues to as the season progresses. The team hopes to continue their success at Districts and States. They would love to have support at the races. February 14 is districts at Okemo. The guys will be competing at Burke on March 5th at states and the girls on the 8th at Pico.
