American Legion Department of Vermont Scholarship

The American Legion Department of Vermont Scholarship program awards multiple scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,500, to qualified high school seniors seeking higher education. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. residents attending a Vermont secondary school whose parents are legal residents of Vermont. The application, which requires a transcript and two high school staff recommendations, is typically due on April 1st each year.

Emblem Club Scholarships

These are local and state-level scholarships sponsored by the Emblem Clubs (an auxiliary of the Elks Lodge) for students in the Hartford and greater Vermont area. The Hartford Emblem Club Scholarship is for local students and the VT State Association of Emblem Clubs Scholarship is a statewide award, often using the same application materials. Both are intended for students pursuing post-secondary education and are judged on character, achievement, and need, with applications typically due in the spring (April/May).

Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a renewable, need-based scholarship with an average award of $6,000 to $10,000 for students seeking their first four-year bachelor's degree. It is exclusively for permanent residents of the New England states (CT, ME, MA, NH, RI, VT) who demonstrate strong academic achievement (3.0+ GPA), a consistent work ethic, and commitment to community service. The primary application deadline is May 1st, with an early response option for high school seniors in early April.

Vermont Golf Association Scholarship Fund

The Vermont Golf Association Scholarship Fund provides renewable grants of up to $1,000 annually to Vermont high school seniors and current college students who are actively affiliated with the game of golf. Applicants are judged on academic performance and their connection to golf (playing, working, or participating in programs). The application typically opens in mid-January and the deadline is usually around April 15th.

Woodstock Garden Club Patsy Highberg Scholarship

The Patsy Highberg Scholarship is awarded to assist individual students in post-secondary studies related to plant and/or environmental sciences. Such studies may include agriculture, botany, conservation, horticulture, forestry, landscape design/architecture, environmental studies, or other related fields. The scholarship comprises a one-time award on behalf of the individual student in the amount of $2,000.

The application deadline is April 14, 2025. 

Winona Smith Scholarship

The Winona Smith Scholarship is awarded by the League of Women Voters of Vermont Education Fund to Vermont high school seniors planning to attend college or trade school. It offers $2,000 to three recipients who demonstrate a strong commitment to civic participation and community service, as well as financial need. Applicants must submit a teacher recommendation and two essays on civic and world events by the typical April 30th deadline.
