Counseling and Support
The Mission of Woodstock Union's Professional School Counseling Office is to provide a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate counseling program addressing the academic, college, career, and social-emotional learning of all students.
Through collaboration with fellow educators, parents, and community members, we support our educational system to ensure all students in the district are prepared with the stewardship and growth mindset needed to function in our ever-changing society.
Adolescence is a time when friends and a sense of belonging become a top priority in students' lives. Counselors are available in a variety of ways, from assisting students in making connections with others to mediating when conflicts arise. Healthy communication and healthy relationships are modeled, taught, and practiced in our office. In a world where the advances of technology are outpacing our ability to adapt, adolescent use and misuse of social media have created unique and challenging social situations. Counselors are experienced in supporting students to problem solve how to extricate themselves from communications that have gotten out of their control or to protect themselves when they find themselves on the receiving end of misuse. Counselors also encourage appropriate use of technology to avoid online conflicts.
Several school-wide educational events are planned yearly for all grades to address concerns such as bullying, social media etiquette, and healthy choices.
Counseling Office
The counseling office’s doors are open and students are always welcome to come in and seek support. Depression, anxiety, grief, family crises, and the stress of everyday life can be overwhelming. We pride ourselves on having a safe and nurturing environment in the counseling suite and we are available to listen, provide support, and make referrals to outside therapists or resources when needed.

Middle School
Transition
-
The main goal for our 7th-grade students is to smoothly transition from their local elementary schools into the larger middle school community. The transition to middle school is one that is exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of opportunity. The middle school counselors understand the importance of this time of life. We believe a smooth transition into middle school is accomplished by getting to know all the students, listening to parents’ and teachers’ insights, and being available and transparent about the process. Counselors visit classrooms and meet in small groups to get to know all of the students and to familiarize them with the support our office has to provide. Students are encouraged to come in during study halls, before or after school, or during lunch/advisory time if they need help with something, need a break in their day, or just want to visit and say hello. Counselors will also reach out when a student is referred by a parent/caregiver, teacher, or concerned peer. Several school-wide educational events are planned for grades 7-9 every year to address current concerns such as bullying, social media etiquette, and healthy choices.
-
Eighth graders returning to Woodstock Middle School typically understand the role of the counselors in the school. Our goal in working with 8th-grade students is to review the many ways in which we provide support. We visit 8th-grade classes to reacquaint students with our services and to stress the importance of looking out for each other. In those visits, leadership and stewardship of their community are encouraged. In partnership with teachers, administrators, parents, and a caring community, the school counselors will help all students to be successful lifelong learners and problem solvers. The 8th-grade year is a time to prepare for the future. Our goal is to prepare students to become lifelong learners who are able to embrace challenges while becoming successful members of their communities. As effective collaborators, our students will celebrate diversity while working with others to creatively solve problems.
-
Counselors will reach out to students when referred by teachers, parents, guardians, and concerned peers. Parents are encouraged to contact their child's counselor at any point throughout the school year to discuss any needs or concerns.
High School
Four-Year Graduation Plans
-
Each student graduating from Woodstock Union High School will complete a 4-year graduation plan. Starting at the end of their 8th grade year each student will connect with their counselor and outline the required classes needed to complete the graduation requirements.
Annually students will meet with their counselor to review their graduation plan, review their completed courses, and which ones should be taken in the coming years to suit their intended college and career path.

Message from your 7-9th Grade School Counselors:
Choosing your courses and planning a schedule in middle school is so exciting. You are presented with opportunities to explore something new or delve deeper into subjects that interest you. Also, for the first time you can make personal decisions, based on your own needs, about how full your schedule should be. No one wants an academic load that is either too easy or too hard. Take time to reflect on how full your life is with extra-curricular activities, how much academic support you need during the school day and whether or not you are ready for the added academic challenge of learning a new language. As you make these decisions, work with your family and your current teachers. They can help guide your choices. The grades 7-9 counselors are available to assist you with any questions, concerns or goal planning as you journey into this next phase of your education.
-
Beginning in the spring semester, middle school counselors visit 6th-grade classes from each sending school. Students are given an overview of the middle school schedule, required courses and how to choose electives. A hard copy course guide will be sent home with each student to look over course descriptions.
Required classes will automatically be entered into schedules so course selection is for electives only. The required "core classes" are Humanities, Math, Life Science, and Wellness (1/2 Health, 1/2 PE), and Geometry (1/4).
Students and parents are encouraged to consult with current 6th grade teachers for advice on how many electives to choose, and whether or not to take a foreign language in middle school.
After the classroom visits, a course request form will be emailed to both students and parents. Fill it out together and submit the form by the stated due date
Completed schedules will be sent out over the summer.
Counselors are available the week before the first day of school to make any necessary schedule changes and adjustments.

Academics
-
Our counselors work closely with faculty and administrators on a variety of teams to ensure that students are learning, making progress, and are intellectually challenged.
-
For students who excel, assistance is provided to find enrichment opportunities both within and outside the classroom. Motivated students should talk to their teachers about opportunities to dig deeper into the subject matter being covered in class.
-
For struggling students, grades, test scores, and classroom performance are reviewed in team settings and targeted interventions are put in place as needed. Counselors may take the lead in changing classes, finding smaller more structured study halls, locating student tutors, or assisting students to organize their day to make time for consultation with teachers.
Social-Emotional Well being
-
Social Emotional Education is an important component of WUHSMS counseling office.
We conduct individual counseling sessions with each student within each grade level. Small group counseling sessions, classroom guidance, and large group guidance are also established practices.
We also provide referrals to outside community mental health agencies.
-
Please connect with your school counselor if you are seeking academic tutoring from an NHS Student Tutor!

Eighth grade is a time of personal exploration. Who am I? What are my interests, strengths, and abilities? How do I need to grow to realize my aspirations?
The eighth-grade team believes that students' futures hold unlimited and unknown possibilities and that exploring those possibilities impacts the learning that they engage in today. Cognizant of the demands that lie ahead for students, teachers design learning activities that strike a balance between exploration and structure, high expectations and support, and personalization and collaboration.

This information is beneficial for counselors, students, and parents to review and outline which schools are your safety, target, and reach schools.

Students are encouraged and have the ability to meet with their school counselor to discuss courses at any time throughout the year. We strive to make sure students are selecting courses based on reaching not only the graduation requirements but also appropriate selections to meet their post-secondary goals.
In the spring, School counselors present to all 8th-grade students about the 9th-grade course sign-up process.
Students are informed about 9th-grade course requirements as well as graduation requirements. In addition, students are informed about the courses needed in 9th grade for various career and educational pathways.
-
We know that many students who live out of the district, have school choice in high school and will join us in 9th grade. Parents/guardians can begin the registration process by going to the Supervisory Union website and clicking on the "Enroll a New Student" tab. Once the registration process is complete, students can contact the counseling office to schedule an individual appointment. One of our counselors will review your prior courses and collaborate with you to select the ones that align best with your academic objectives and personal aspirations. It is ideal to begin this process in the spring of your 8th grade year if possible. This timing will increase your chances of securing the elective courses you prefer. This is also an opportune time to gather details about extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs and various school events that occur throughout the year.
