High school support
High school brings new academic challenges, increased independence, and important decisions about your future. Our counselors are here to support you through course planning, academic struggles, social challenges, and personal growth throughout all four years.
Course selection and planning
Choosing your courses and planning a schedule in high school is exciting! You'll have opportunities to explore new subjects or go deeper into areas that interest you. As a high school student, you can take more electives than ever before.
Think about your life outside school - how busy are you with activities? Do you need extra academic support during the day? Are you ready to take on learning a new language? Talk with your family and current teachers as you make these choices. Your counselors are here to help with any questions or planning.
9th grade course selection
In the spring, school counselors present to all 8th-grade students about the 9th-grade course selection process. Students learn about 9th-grade course requirements, graduation requirements, and the courses needed for various career and educational pathways.

Your high school career is a building block to your future. Whether your post-secondary plans include entering the workforce, joining the military, taking a gap year, or attending college, these years count. You're deciding who you are, where you fit, what you do well, and how to move forward as you become an independent young adult.

Throughout the year
Students and parents can meet with counselors to discuss courses at any time. We make sure students select courses that meet graduation requirements and align with their post-secondary goals. In the spring, students and families receive information about course selection for the following year.
New students
If you're joining us from another district, contact the counseling office to schedule an individual appointment after completing registration through the Supervisory Union website. We'll review your prior courses and help you select ones that align with your academic goals and personal interests. Starting this process in the spring of your 8th grade year increases your chances of getting your preferred electives and gives you time to learn about extracurricular activities.
Four-year graduation planning
Each student graduating from Woodstock Union High School will complete a four-year graduation plan. Starting at the end of their 8th grade year, each student will connect with their counselor and outline the required classes needed to complete the graduation requirements.
Annually students will meet with their counselor to review their graduation plan, review their completed courses, and determine which ones should be taken in the coming years to suit their intended college and career path. These regular check-ins ensure you stay on track for graduation while making choices that align with your goals.
Academic support
When you're struggling with coursework, our counselors work closely with teachers and administrators to ensure you get the support you need. We review grades, test scores, and classroom performance in team settings and put targeted interventions in place as needed. This might include changing classes, finding smaller more structured study halls, locating student tutors, or helping you organize your day to make time for consultation with teachers.
Peer tutoring
Need extra help with a challenging class? Connect with your school counselor if you are seeking academic tutoring from a National Honor Society student tutor. These peer tutors can provide support in specific subjects and help you develop better study strategies.
Social-emotional support
Social-emotional education is an important component of our counseling office. We conduct individual counseling sessions with students in each grade level, along with small group counseling sessions, classroom guidance, and large group presentations.
High school can bring unique pressures - from academic stress to social challenges to family expectations. Our doors are always open when you need someone to talk to, whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or just the everyday stress of being a teenager. We also provide referrals to outside community mental health agencies when additional support would be helpful.
Planning for the future
While you're focused on succeeding in high school, it's also important to start thinking about what comes next. Our counselors can help you begin exploring career interests and post-secondary options.
